FOCUS: The South African Wine Industry Professional Body (SAWIPB) was established to advance the competencies of practitioners across the entire wine industry value chain. This includes occupations spanning from vineyard and farm-based roles to production, logistics, marketing, and tourism—representing the ±300,000 elementary workers employed in the sector. The goal is to enhance employability, elevate professional standards, and support the overall profitability and sustainability of the industry through targeted skills development.
SAWIPB plays a pivotal role in informing learning programmes, advising training providers, and offering ongoing professional development initiatives aligned to clearly defined occupational competencies developed by industry experts.
A key initiative includes the introduction and promotion of a Code of Conduct for wine industry practitioners, aimed at fostering ethical behaviour, promoting stakeholder confidence, and reducing the industry’s environmental and resource impact.
As the first professional body dedicated to coordinating skills development across the wine industry value chain, SAWIPB is supported by a broad network of employers and sector stakeholders who are committed to professionalising and transforming the industry.
